Chiropractic Care For Infants

Holistic Treatment of Infantile Colic, Earache and Reflux

Have you wondered why chiropractors see newborns & infants for chiropractic care? Infants aren't complaining about back pain, so why check their little spines?

Dr. Cheryl La Grange has been called the "baby whisperer" by many because of her gentle way of adjusting babies for the resolution of various newborn issues such as infantile colic, earache, reflux, as well as resolving spinal issues in infants and children.

Spinal subluxations often run hand-in-hand with sensory processing disorder, ADHD, sleep issues, and so many other common chronic problems children are faced with today. it is not a far stretch to consider that a child's birth may be the origin of some lingering problems.

While chiropractic care may not cure severe cases of birth traumas, it is a tool that may provide help in lessening symptoms, improving the quality of life, and allowing the body to be in its best alignment possible.

Doctors often overlook birth trauma as the cause of chronic problems, and over time, as the child grows, it becomes a normal part of life. But the truth is that birth trauma is real, and the impact it can have on a mother or child needs to be addressed. Psychological therapy, physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, and other healing techniques should all be considered following an extremely difficult birth.

A visit to Riversedge Chiropractor for you and your infant or newborn requires about 15 - 20 minutes of time for the entire office visit.

What is Traumatic Birth Syndrome?

TBS is a condition in which the spine is injured during or shortly after the delivery process resulting in nerve system damage or interference.
TBS includes any birth injury causing a vertebra to move out of its normal alignment, creating pressure on the nerves – often referred by chiropractors as a subluxation or Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

This can occur when:

  • The head, neck, or any other part of the spine and pelvis of the infant have been pulled and twisted during the birth process
  • The birth process is prolonged
  • The delivery process is difficult
  • Extraction aids are used during delivery (i.e. forceps, vacuum, etc.)
  • The child is delivered by Caesarian section
  • Injuries resulting from TBS may go unnoticed during the trauma of the delivery process. TBS may be painless in nearly all infants and adults, but there are symptoms that most often occur when the condition has become noticeably symptomatic.

When chiropractors see newborn patients, it’s usually when a parent that just wants their child checked – no symptoms. Misalignment of the very first vertebra is commonly found as it is the one most likely to misalign during the birth process.

The adjustment to a newborn is very gentle, no popping or cracking occurs during the process. Chiropractors use a finger to apply pressure on a specific vertebra to move a specific direction. The baby without symptoms often will sleep during the entire process, and a fussy baby visibly settles and relaxes his ir her limbs.

The baby with symptoms may express some discomfort when the misaligned area is touched, often due to a buildup of inflammation in that area. Symptomatic babies are usually brought into our office experiencing ear infections, colic, or digestive difficulties.
